Welcome

The Carol Ann Sanders Foundation is a sincere labor of love established in the name of a very special woman; a beautiful wife and mother, devoted grandmother, loving daughter, dear friend.  Carol represents so many things to many people. The list is endless. Much like the unconditional love and cherished memories we all share of this fun-loving, quick-witted woman who holds such an endearing place in our hearts.

Over ten years ago, Carol was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Today, while she is fortunate to have full-time care to meet her medical needs, the disease has severely diminished her overall quality of life. As her loved ones, we've witnessed the effects of this disease firsthand and have made it our priority to help advance the efforts to find a cure and assist other families experiencing the same challenges. Proceeds of our efforts help the Alzheimer's Association with continued research and also allow us to provide financial grants to help with expenses such as day care assistance and medicines for families striving to keep their loved one with Alzheimer's in the home unit as long as possible.

In Carol's honor, it is our privilege to help others in the name of the Carol Ann Sanders Foundation.  We invite you to look around... take in the information... stroll our gallery. Please come back often and be a part of our growth. We sincerely appreciate your support.

Thank you!

WE'RE ON THE MOVE!

Life is certainly about change and the Carol Ann Sanders Foundation has recently experienced a life change of our own by relocating to the Houston, Texas area.  We have had a wonderful time in Minnesota and have been fortunate to develop strong, long-lasting relationships over the years that have helped us raise significant awareness in the crusade against Alzheimer's disease. And now we look forward to this new chapter in life as we meet friends in our new home that will keep our continued our efforts on course.  During this time we will be updating the site and preparing to celebrate our celebration of the first five years of the Carol Ann Sanders Foundation.

Those of you in the Twin Cities Metro area that have attended MIAC Division III College sporting events in Minnesota over the past couple years may have seen the dude in the green vest with the big camera on the sidelines. That's our very own Dave Sanders - doing what he loves - capturing memories with his camera!  He has enjoyed the opportunity to make friends and establish relationships with many of the fine schools Minnesota has to offer.

A couple of years ago, he set up shop to sell his sports photography on AllproSportsPix.com and it's been full steam ahead ever since. We're happy that so many people are enjoying Dave's photographs and the memories they provide for years to come.  We're especially pleased to announce we have bridged the efforts of AllproSportsPix.com and the Carol Ann Sanders Foundation and a portion of proceeds from AllproSportsPix.com photo sales will go to support our efforts in the crusade against Alzheimer's.

As part of the overall Sanders life change, Dave is now focusing his photographic efforts on the high school and college sports teams in Houston and its surrounding areas and looks forward to capturing many wonderful memories of the talented and hard-working athletes the Lone Star State has to offer.

Take a moment to visit AllproSportsPix.com. If you're interested in having Dave photograph your athlete or team, drop him a line. He'd love the opportunity to capture special memories for you!

Sharing Special Memories

Memories are an integral part of all of our lives. Over the course of the disease, Alzheimer's affects one's ability to remember life's events. It is our desire to help keep some of those memories alive and we would like you to share in some of our memories of the woman we work in honor of.  We hope you will enjoy these touching and heartfelt anecdotes those who know and love Carol have chosen to share.  We want you to know how special she is to us and we invite you to share your own special memory of Carol with us!

"Carol Sanders is my mom and my role model, my biggest cheerleader and the best friend I ever had. I am so grateful for the years I had with my mom and the closeness we shared. Now that I am a mother, I find that I constantly call upon my memories of her to help guide me with my own children. I just wish she were able to truly experience this part of my life with me. She was my constant companion and I miss her terribly. My boys would love her and she would absolutely adore them. She gave me such a wonderful childhood. I hope I can take her lead and give the same to my children."  - Kelly Sanders

"Carol became my daughter the moment I met her. And she will be my daughter all the days of our lives. We always shared our November birthdays together. And when I married her dad, Paul, with brother 'Winky' we became a wonderful family! When she and Ben married, I would spend my Saturdays at their home as I worked during the week. I enjoyed listening to David's and Rick's stories of school. They loved to share their History and Math with me. I was there for all three births. When Kelly came along Carol, Kelly and I spent Saturdays shopping in the mall and going to Fiddlers' Three for Carol's favorite pecan pie, and my favorite coconut cream. Only Kelly always tried something different each time. Carol is in my thoughts and prayers every day and in my heart forever. She is my daughter and I love her."  - Mom Rex (Elizabeth A. Peale)

"Carol came into my life in 1958 when she was dating my brother, Benny. She taught me about make up, hair and shaving under my arms! She was always there for me and when she and Benny got married in 1959 she became my sister-in-law. But I always considered her my "other sister". She was there when my sister passed away, she was there when my father passed away and she was there when we lost my mother. Carol has been a huge influence on my life, from talking to her about my dates to playing cards until the wee hours of the night as I got older. In 1968 she had Kelly on February 1st and I had Ronda on April 25th. Those two little girls were practically inseparable. We dressed them like twins and took them everywhere we went. I would go to the gym to watch her play volleyball on my day off as she played twice a week, bowled two or three times a week and did her housework on Fridays. She was the most active person I know but still cook care of her husband and children. Her family was always her world and everyone knew it. She used to dance with my mom because the both loved to dance and she just had fun doing whatever she wanted to do. I miss her terribly. I love you."  - Darlene Vastine

"My grandma, Carol Ann Sanders, holds a special place in my heart. I will always remember her as a beautiful, energetic, caring woman. She is the best grandma and we have had some great times together. I specifically remember how she would always make my brother and me the best honey toast; it is still my favorite snack. I used to love going over to Grandma and Grandpa's house. They had the best movies, and a big screen television! Their home was so well taken care of and I felt very comfortable there. Besides snuggling up with my honey toast and a marathon of The Lion King, I loved going out on the town with my grandma, especially to the bowling alley. My brother and I would watch her roll one strike after another. She was great at whatever she did. From those times until now I think of her as being invincible. I love my grandma very much and she will always be my superhero."  -Janelle Sanders

"I remember first meeting Carol on Easter nearly 10 years ago. In fact, it was the first time in meeting my then-boyfriend's entire family. That could have been a nerve-wracking situation, but not with Carol.  She was warm and gracious, very welcoming. She became my mother-in-law a short time later, just about the time she was diagnosed with early stages of dementia. When our first child was born she would come to our home to visit during the days while I was home with the baby. I so enjoyed our little chats. Again, she was so gracious and with just that sparkle in her eye, or the wit in her conversation I realized just how blessed I was to have such a wonderful mother-in-law. Time passed and the disease progressed where Carol could no longer be left alone at home. Eventually, Carol would spend a couple days a week with me as my father-in-law, her primary caregiver, would take some time to run errands or enjoy a round of golf. I loved that time and I appreciated the opportunity to be with her. We'd go for walks, take in some shopping, or simply play with our children, Jared and Jordan, and watch a bit of TV. I remember how she loved to watch "The Golden Girls" and more than once she'd get up and dance along when we'd watch the movie "Footloose" or "Dirty Dancing". Carol was also with our family on nearly every weekend for a full line up of little league baseball or youth soccer. We'd pick her up early Saturday morning, stop at Starbucks for a hot chocolate and head to the fields for an action-packed day of kids sports. She loved to watch her oldest grandchildren  Janelle and Jeremy, in their sports activities. What a trooper! She didn't seem to care where we were going as long as she was going too! We weren't always sure how much she was understanding but the smile on her face quickly let us know. I absolutely cherish those times. They will always have a special place in my memories, just as she will always have a special place in my heart." - Michele Sanders
